Founded in 1945 on abandoned sugarcane land, the school was known to the rural youth simply as La Granja. The school offered a place for grounded education, dignity, work, and possibility by bringing the aprender haciendo (learn by doing) model into practice. It combined training, study, and community life to educate young people in their leadership.

Dr. Robert D. Milk’s archival research, photographs, correspondence, and firsthand testimony traces La Granja’s evolution from ambitious experiment to internationally recognized model of a school environment, despite the political atmosphere, shaping mid-century Cuba. This book is both a historical record and personal account of the legacy of La Granja, where education, collective imagining for the future, and life was brighter in rural Cuba.
