Introducing Eréndira, by Rose M. Borunda, a profound journey of heritage, resilience, and identity. This stunning debut novel illuminates an intertwining legacy of two young women separated by time, united by a name, a spirit of resistance, and the quest for self-discovery.

Seamlessly bridging the present with the past, Borunda’s narrative delves deep into some of the historically known struggles and triumphs of Indigenous communities while delivering a story rich with contemporary personal resonance.

Set against the backdrop of Northern California and rooted in the legacy of the Purépecha Princess Warrior Eréndira, our titular character, as modern-day Erèndira uncovers family truths and historical memories. Guided by her maternal grandmother, Naníta, young Eréndira embarks on a transformative journey. Along the way, she gains the courage to confront the lingering impact of conquest and colonization while embracing her Indigenous identity. Ultimately, she comes to recognize the power in knowing herstory and reclaiming the wealth of knowledge withheld from her ancestors.

By highlighting the often-overlooked history of the Purépecha people, Eréndira provides readers with an insightful viewof Indigenous struggles, challenging the traditional emphasis on Mexica or Aztec historical narratives. Borunda’s narrative offers a powerful critique of how history is traditionally told from the perspective of the conquerors while excluding the voices of Indigenous communities. Modern-day Eréndira’s journey of discovery about the Indigenoushistory of Northern California echoes the book’s broader theme: the complexities of the pre-Hispanic world, wherealliances and conflicts among Indigenous groups defy the idea of a monolithic culture. Through its thoughtfulexploration of the past and present, while resonating with contemporary struggles for identity and voice, Eréndiraenriches readers’ understanding of the diverse and complex histories of Indigenous peoples.” —Brenda Romero, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Spanish, Graduate Coordinator, Spanish Program Department of World Languages and Literatures, California State University, Sacramento

Eréndira, by Rose M. Borunda, is a powerful novel that resonates deeply, and provides a profound connection to Michoacán—the place of my birth and a place I call home—even though I never lived there long enough. My family migrated to California at an early age, but the story evoked in me the aspiration to fully reconnect and call it ‘home’ one day. In her novel, Borunda underscores the significance of storytelling as cultural preservation. As Naníta explains, ‘The final death is when we stop telling stories about the person.’ This profound reminder highlights the transformative power of narratives in keeping memory alive and connecting past and present. Ultimately, Eréndira is a compelling exploration of familial bonds, historical memory, and belonging. Borunda’s vivid storytelling makes it a must-read for those seeking narratives of healing and reclamation, regardless of the place one calls home.” —Nancy Huante-Tzintzun, PhD, Assistant Professor, Chicanx and Latinx Program Co-Director, Ethnic Studies, California State University, Sacramento

“A masterful socio-historical narrative that weaves together threads of resistance, survival, and Indigenous identity through the lens of Purépecha worldviews.” —Dr. Heidy Sarabia, CSU Sacramento

    Author

After starting a professional career in child assault prevention and school counseling. After witnessing and interceding on the reverberating impact of historical conquest and colonization, she sought her doctorate degree at the University of San Francisco to gain a larger perspective of the structures that sustain and strengthen subjugation and relational cruelty. With her degree, she embarked upon a tenure track position at California State University, Sacramento while concurrently working regionally and throughout the nation with indigenous and tribal communities. This collective experience furthered her insight as to what exists in our systems and our hearts that fuels or heals the challenges that our youth and nation(s) face today.

As a descendant of the Purépecha people, Borunda pivots from scholarly writing as she offers the courage of a legendary historical figure from her tribe—Eréndira—and employs lessons from this princess to a young woman of the same name facing challenges in modern era.

In Borunda’s spare time, she enjoys learning from and being nurtured by nature, socializing with growth mindset(ed) friends, performing and offering Native American flute melodies, watching her two children Michael, Lilian, and plus one, Aria, carve a more peaceful and harmonious life for the next generation, including her new grandson, Cyrus.

She lives with her husband and kitties in the hills that have been home to the Sierra Miwok for thousands of years.
